Plus: Podathon winners, hanging chads, and Dark Shadows!

00:30 – A big thank you to everyone who supported our first annual Podathon and the voodoo that we do so well! Winners, chosen by Toby and a surprisingly enthusiastic Violet, were announced to donors by email, so if you donated and didn’t receive that message let us know.
.
04:09 – Mystery solved: listener Liga weighs in on one explanation for our popularity in Latvia! Liga’s dog might or might not be involved!
.
06:09 – Our first special, exclusive, donors-only episode will debut tomorrow! Emails are going out on Sep. 21, 2020, to donors of $5 or more with instructions on accessing our episode about the Libra Equinox. If you donated and didn’t receive the message, please check your spam folder and, if it’s not there, email April(at)bigskyastrology.com.
.
07:40 – It’s Libra season! Sun enters Libra on Sep. 22, 6:31 am PDT, marking autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere.
.
08:56 – Much love to listeners dealing with fires on the West Coast of the United States! (And since we recorded this, our friends on the East Coast are up against some scary hurricanes, so all be well!)
.
09:51 – The Libra season highlights relating. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, it heralds the season when we celebrate the harvest, our ancestors, and thanksgiving. Farmer’s Almanac reminds us that the word equinox comes from the Latin for “equal” and “night.” At the equinoxes we have roughly equal day and night hours. It’s the season that emphasizes balance – equilibrium - in relationships and all matters.
.
12:25 – Next episode: Jen’s solar return!!
.
12:37 – Mercury enters the rocky part of its journey through Libra this week with a square to Saturn Sep. 23 at 3:38 am PDT, and tension between collaboration and top-down authority. This aspect continues a Mercury/Saturn cycle that began on Jan. 12, 2020, and is NOT, in fact, an opening square from Mercury to Saturn…
.
15:31 - … as pointed out by Encyclopedia Braun, it is a closing square! Oops! But there is much worthwhile food for thought in here, anyway, so we left it all in. Look at April, growing as a person!
.
15:55 – This is the first of 3 closing squares from Mercury to Saturn. The others are on November 1 (Mercury Rx) and November 6.
.
16:08 – What is the difference between an opening and closing square? One urges us to simply action, the other prescribes reflection and action that’s based on experience. Look to the discussion of First Quarter and Last Quarter lunar phases in Episode 34, The 8 Lunar Phases: Have Them With a Salad, for helpful insights.
.
17:43 – Mercury is now in the shadow period (September 23) of its next retrograde period (Oct. 14-Nov. 3), and Saturn is slowing to turn direct (Sep. 29) - an intractable-sounding scenario. As always, review Ep. 12: Mercury Retrograde: Where are my Pants?
.
18:21 – The current cozy relationship between the Sun and Venus prompts an accidental discussion of mutual reception. Look back to Episode 4 | The Capricorn Solstice is Frequently Sunny in Minneapolis, for a protracted discussion of this condition in which two planets are in the sign ruled by the other.
.
19:37 – Mercury opposes Mars (Sep 24 3:54 pm PDT), the halfway point of a cycle that began with Mercury conjoined Mars in Virgo on June 18, July 8, and Sep. 3, 2019. How are you expressing ambition, anger, assertiveness in communication? Do you find there’s a pattern in how you’re giving voice to Mars?
.
22:27 - Mercury and Mars are in a t-square with Jupiter/Saturn/Pluto in Capricorn. The missing cardinal sign? Cancer, which prefers to hold its cards close to its chest. It’s always okay to pause and process your feelings before speaking.
.
24:29 – Mercury enters Scorpio (Sep. 27 12:41 am PDT) marks a shift away from diplomacy and toward deeper conversations. Mercury will retrograde in this sign (Oct. 14-Nov. 3), stationing direct on the date of the U.S. presidential election, summoning memories of election day 2000 when Mercury was also stationing direct. Hanging chads, anyone?
.
25:31 – In Episode 12, Mercury Retrograde: Where are My Pants?, we discussed Mercury being retrograde in water signs this year. Mercury in Scorpio has little patience for small talk – it wants real talk. While Mercury is in the sleuthing sign (through Dec. 1), dig deep.
28:21 – ** MOONWATCH ** Mercury in Scorpio brings a Dark Shadows feel to our introduction of the First Quarter Moon at 1.29 Capricorn (Sep. 23 at 6:55 pm PDT). Time to take action on something conceived at the Dec 25/26, 2019 Solar Eclipse. (See Episode 5, Unboxing Eclipses.) The Sabian symbols, “Three stained-glass windows, one damaged by bombardment”, and “The light of the 6th race transmuted to the 7th”, talk about “seeing the light,” brightening situations, and changing forms. (Shout-out to Sabian symbols specialist Blain Bovee.) We previously discussed Lunar Phase Families in Episode 41: Pisces Full Moon and the Yin to Your Yang, and Episode 45: Podathon Day 4 - A Thor’s Day Last Quarter Moon.
33:00 – As always, April and Jen appreciate you! If you enjoy the show, take a moment to subscribe and give us a 5-star rating and/or write us a happy review! We want to offer our warm thoughts once again for everyone who donated to the podcast in our recent Podathon. This episode is brought to you by Podathon donor SANDRA MOSLEY! Thank you, Sandra, for helping us meet our Podathon goals! If you didn’t get a chance to donate during, you can donate $5 or more and we’ll send you an invitation to our upcoming special episodes for the equinoxes and solstices. Thanks, podpals!

047 | Virgo New Moon: A Fresh Start
Sunday Sep 13, 2020
Sunday Sep 13, 2020
April & Jen enter the cleansing and decluttering heart of the Virgo New Moon, in opposition to healing and spiritual Neptune. The Sun engages in smooth aspects with Saturn and Pluto, calling forth our power and authenticity. And a protracted discussion of midpoints – what are they and why are they important? Also: animal trainers, feng shui, and our very own Encyclopedia Braun!

00:30 – A big thank you to everyone who supported our first annual Podathon with donations and by downloading our five daily episodes! Winners of our big drawing will be announced by email on the 15th.
.
01:55 – Are you listening from Latvia, Norway, India, Portugal, or New Zealand? Tell us what makes our podcast one of the top Society and Culture podcasts in your country! Is it the Bob Ross references?
.
03:17 – The Sun trines Pluto (Sep. 14, 4:05 pm PDT) on the Sabian symbols 23 Virgo (Sun), “An animal trainer,” and 23 Capricorn (Pluto), “Two awards for bravery in war,” at the degree of January’s Saturn/Pluto conjunction. Both symbols speak of bravery in confronting dangerous things, and imply that our power derives from handling small things, and serving something larger than ourselves.
.
06:30 – For more on the Jan. 2020 Saturn/Pluto conjunction, revisit Episode 6: Saturn & Pluto Eat More Crunchy Things, Episode 7: Saturn and Pluto Go to the Repair Shop, and Episode 8: Saturn and Pluto Need a Party.
.
07:19 – Venus squares Uranus (Sep. 15, 8:28 am PDT). This combination can bring unexpected expenses or income, and sometimes both. Unexpected developments in relationships, especially around the subject of independence vs. togetherness.
.
10:22 – Jen Braun is a regular Encyclopedia Brown! To hear more about the Sabian symbols (Venus) “Children on a swing in a huge oak tree,” and (Uranus) “A woman sprinkling flowers” go to Episode 23, Talkin’ Taurus and the Void (Of Course!) Moon.
.
10:26 – What are midpoints and why do they matter?
.
15:53 – We enter the midpoint between eclipse seasons with this week’s square from the Sun to the Lunar Nodes (Sep. 16, 5:53 pm PDT). Sun in Virgo arbitrating between Gemini/Sagittarius nodes to find points of commonality in their search for truth. (Shout out to wonderful astrologer Caroline Casey!)
.
17:40 – Learn more about Lunar Nodes on Episode 24: Scorpio Full Moon & Lunar Nodes for Grasshoppers. And take a deep dive on eclipses with us in Episode 5 Unboxing Eclipses.
.
18:33 – ** MOONWATCH ** 25 deg. Virgo “A boy with a censer.” With the New Moon point opposed Neptune and trine Saturn, the rituals of cleansing, organizing your home, and healing your thought patterns can help you sow new seeds, particularly in the area of work.
.
22:19 – A couple of books we like about decluttering with feng shui: Karen Kingston’s Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui and Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life by Karen Rauch Carter.
.
22:52 – Sign up for April's mailing list and you’ll get a new, monthly Working with the Moon e-book for each lunar cycle!
.
23:22 – The Sun trine Saturn (Sep. 17, 2:36 pm PDT) rewards a good work ethic and possibly indicates a new job or kind of work. Make sure what you do now is aligned with your authentic self.
.
24:43 – April is a water sprite!
.
24:54 – As Mercury finishes up in Libra this week, it squares Jupiter on Sep. 17 at 3:35 am (conversation out of balance, philosophical disagreements) and Pluto on Sep. 20 at 10:18 pm PDT (deep conversation, language that prompts power struggles, but great time to continue New Moon ritual because words and ideas have tremendous power). Listen to your inner voice, and look very deep within before you engage others in important conversation.
.
28:05 – Here comes the Sun, following in Mercury’s footsteps through the treacherous terrain of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto. More about the Sun’s ingress into Libra in next week’s episode (and even more in the subscriber-only special episode we’ll release next Tuesday!).
.
29:25 – As always, April and Jen appreciate you! If you enjoy the show, take a moment to subscribe and give us a 5-star rating and/or write us a happy review! We want to offer our warm thoughts once again for everyone who donated to the podcast in our recent Podathon! If you didn’t get a chance to donate then and would like to support the podcast, toss a few dollars our way to help keep the show going. If you donate $5 or more, we’ll send you an invitation to our upcoming special episodes for the equinoxes and solstices. Thanks, podpals!

046 | Podathon Day 5: Jupiter Enters the Home Stretch
Thursday Sep 10, 2020
Thursday Sep 10, 2020
It’s the FIFTH AND FINAL DAY of the first annual Big Sky Astrology PODATHON! We conclude this festive, five-day event on a contemplative note, remembering the attacks of September 11, 2001. We consider the Sun’s annual opposition to Neptune and how the world has been altered since their conjunction in March; a sensitive Moon in Cancer; and Jupiter turning direct after a long retrograde sleep. Also: crab shells and possums, a good night’s sleep, the witness protection program, and why you should never ask April to do basic math on the fly.
.
This episode concludes a series of five daily mini-episodes in our Podathon extravaganza! How better to celebrate our childhood memories of the Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon? JOIN US for up-close-and-personal looks at each day’s aspects! THRILL to our special Podathon theme! And best of all, HEAR ABOUT all the treats and opportunities coming your way as a donor to the podcast!

Show notes and links
4:35 - Sun in Virgo opposes Neptune in Pisces today, emphasizing the need to balance rational intellect with faith and intuition. For our extended discussion on the Virgo/Pisces polarity, dive into our archives and revisit Episode 10, Neptune and the Zen of Groundhog Day.
.
5:50 – Leo and Pisces folks may feel the influence of this opposition a little stronger. Leo may feel some uncharacteristic self-doubt and be reminded that they should be a little gentler with their big paws.
.
7:17 – We’ve reached the halfway point of a cycle that began on March 8, 2020, when the Sun conjoined Neptune in Pisces. The future is still not crystal clear, but an opposition provides a broader perspective of where we’ve been and, hopefully, what is the best path forward.
8:20 – The Moon enters Cancer today, so to get on people’s wavelengths, talk about family, pets, and the things closest to their hearts. Others may be a bit sensitive and defensive today as the Moon squares Mercury, so choose your words carefully and avoid difficult conversations if possible for the next couple of days.
9:40 – The Moon will conjoin Uranus at 8:57 pm PDT, which can interfere with sleep. Not a bad time to pay attention to all the good advice about how to get better sleep which we typically ignore.
10:33 – The Moon’s final aspect in Cancer will be a square to Mars, so the whole time the Moon’s in this sign it’s headed toward conflict that is unavoidable but necessary.
11:45 – Jupiter will turn direct on Sep. 12 at 5:42 pm after being retrograde since May 15. Next stop: sextile Neptune in October and conjoined Pluto in November.
12:58 - Jupiter is so big that all of the other planets would fit inside of it – see this NASA graphic! And it’s not that happy in Capricorn, which we discussed way back in Episode 2, Jupiter in Capricorn: Falstaff in a Business Suit.
.
13:50 – Jupiter is now gearing up to finish the last of his work in Capricorn before changing signs in December. As Jupiter approaches an Aquarian conjunction with Saturn in December, there’s a general dissatisfaction about government, rules, structures, authorities, and bureaucracy. While in Capricorn, Jupiter has amplified these matters so they’re more difficult to ignore.
.
And this concludes our gala 1st annual PODATHON! Thank you SO much to everyone who has donated, and to everyone who listens!

00:50 – A reminder that Thursday (“Thor’s Day”) is associated with Jupiter. Learn, teach, take a chance – and, maybe, donate to a podcast you like (hint hint)! (To hear more about how the days of the week were named, listen to Episode 3, Alexa, Play "Love the One You're With")
.
4:13 and 5:05 – Most delightful phrase in the English language: “Kitten mosh-pit.”
.
5:50 - ** MOONWATCH ** A somewhat haunting intro, followed by a discussion of today’s Gemini Last Quarter Moon featuring an archaic tome, ancient knowledge, a Sun/Neptune sneak preview, and a missing table leg. This is the time to reflect upon and finish up the matters initiated at the Aug. 18 Leo New Moon.
.
8:20 - We briefly discussed lunar phase families on Episode 41, “Pisces Full Moon and the Yin to Your Yang!” This Last Quarter Moon also concludes the lunar phase family that began with the June 13, 2018 New Moon at 22.44 Gemini. More about the Gemini Moon on Ep. 43 – Podathon Day 2: Into the Void (-of-Course Moon)!
.
For more on lunar phase families, here’s a link (sent to us by alert listener River) to Dietrech Pessin’s article on this subject at Frank Clifford’s website.
.
10:00 - Here’s April’s blog post about how to find this Last Quarter Moon and other transits in your birth chart.
.
11:00 – April’s beat: The Moon in Gemini! Allegations that people with the Moon in air signs are unfeeling…hurts our air sign Moon feelings! (We also discussed the Gemini Moon on Episode 44 – Podathon Day 3: A Mars Retrograde Hump Day!)
.
12:24 – What your Moon sign says about how you process your day and comfort yourself.
.
14:35 – The Moon shadowboxes with Neptune first thing in the morning (5:17 am PDT), so it’s not the best morning for tackling matters that require very clear thinking (or operating heavy machinery!).
.
15:30 – The Moon ends on a sextile aspect to Mars, and lends encouragement to its newly retrograde pal. (We look at Mars retrograde on Episode 44 – Podathon Day 3: A Mars Retrograde Hump Day!)

Guess what day it is? And… one hump or two? Today’s Moon in Gemini always favors two of anything, but in fact a dromedary has one hump and a Bactrian camel has two! You’ll find our previous scintillating discussion of this distinction, and a camel-related Sabian symbol, in Episode 38, Taurus Last Quarter Moon – but wait, there’s S’more!
.
4:25 - Kids watched lots of game shows in the 1970s because there were maybe three TV channels, no cable or VCRs, and Let’s Make a Deal filled the gap between cartoons! One of the more intriguing questions for the gameshow viewer: What is behind that curtain where Carol Merrill is standing?
.
5:55 – Been missing the Moonwatch theme?
.
6:24 – Today’s Moon in Gemini is (unofficially named by April and Jen) the camel Moon!
.
7:27 – Feeling particularly lucky? Got an insatiable urge to shop for back-to-school supplies? Feeling the wind at your back? Could be the Sun’s trine to Jupiter today! Be yourself, and make your own luck.
.
10:26 – The Mars retrograde we’re about to tell you about is true. Retrograde Mars revisits recent squares to Saturn (Sep. 29), Pluto (Oct. 9), and Jupiter (Oct. 18). These big planets are training our Mars selves to be patient, sheath our claws, and be better kittens.
.
14:40 – On a hopeful note, Jen reminds us that Mars retrogrades only every two years, vs. practically half the year for Saturn-Pluto.
.

For April and Jen, Labor Day in the 1970’s and 1980’s meant one thing: hours of the Jerry Lewis Labor Day MDA telethon! Here’s just a taste.
.
6:00 – The Moon’s rules the populace, and its daily sign, aspects, and phase describe the general mood of the day. Whenever you’re looking for the day’s sign and aspects, you’ll find it in the right-hand margin of April’s website!
.
8:10 – No void-of-course Moon today, but you can revisit our discussion about the VOC Moon in Episode 23, Talkin’ Taurus and the Void (Of Course!) Moon.
.
10:00 – What stories do you have to share at today’s Disseminating lunar phase? Taurus Moon isn’t the chattiest (though April wouldn’t call it introverted), but it does favor cracking out some stationery and sending someone an actual letter. And for a leisurely review of lunar phases: Episode 34, The 8 Lunar Phases: Have Them with a Salad!
