199 | Virgo New Moon: The Power of Self-Sufficiency!
Sunday Sep 10, 2023
Sunday Sep 10, 2023
This week: The Virgo New Moon tastes a lot like Neptune; Mercury turns direct, but takes a minute or two to get up to speed, especially with five other planets still retrograde; the Sun in Virgo sets ego aside and unites with Uranus to explore alternative ways of being; Venus makes one final square to Jupiter with a lesson about bouncing back in the face of disappointment; and April answers a listener question about how to appeal to each sign of the zodiac. Plus: Pisces goes first for a change, a mess or a mystery, and people are not signs!

[2:09] Moon Report! The Virgo New Moon is on Sep. 14 (6:40 PM PDT) at 21°58’ Virgo on the Sabian symbol, 22 Virgo, A royal coat of arms. Check out James Burgess’ interpretation of this symbol.
[3:11] This New Moon opposes Neptune and forms a grand earth trine with Uranus and Pluto. Consider the transformations that could happen if you step up to the plate, in an unorthodox way, to help those in need.
[4:59] This New Moon begins a new Lunar Phase Family Cycle. The First Quarter phase in this cycle is exact on June 13, 2024, the Full Moon on March 13, 2025, and the Last Quarter Moon is on Dec. 11, 2025.
[7:04] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon Periods. On Sep. 12 (8:06 AM PDT), the Moon squares Uranus at 22°59’ Leo-Taurus. It’s VOC for a little over two hours before entering Virgo (10:18 PM PDT). Leo likes standing out, but being part of a group can feel pretty special sometimes.
[8:03] The Moon in Virgo trines Pluto in Capricorn on Sep. 15 (6:49 AM PDT). It’s VOC for about four hours before entering Libra (10:44 AM PDT). This is a moment to contemplate how being independent and self-contained actually contributes to our personal power.
[8:58] On Sep. 17, the Moon in Libra squares Pluto (6:06 PM PDT). It's VOC for just a little under two hours before it enters Scorpio (9:58 PM PDT). If you tend to be too conciliatory with others, think of how you can reclaim power by asserting what you believe is fair and just.
[10:14] Mercury turns direct on Sep. 15 (1:21 PM PDT), at 08°00’ Virgo on the Sabian symbol 8 Virgo, First dancing instruction. Mercury turned retrograde on August 23, 2023. For a moment, six planets were retrograde: Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. It’s time to slow down and relax.
[12:14] Also on Sep. 15 (6:24 PM PDT), the Sun trines Uranus on 22°56’ Virgo and Taurus. The Sabian symbol for the Sun is 23 Virgo, An animal trainer, and the symbol for Uranus is 23 Taurus, A jewelry shop. Give up that idea of who you have to be and explore alternatives.
[14:29] On Sep. 17 (12:18 PM PDT), Venus makes the last of three square aspects to Jupiter. The other two squares in this series were on June 11 and August 22. It's been a process of learning how to handle disappointment or how to handle getting too much of a good thing.
[16:10] Listener Elliott asks about what appeals to different astrological signs. April takes a crack at answering – but remember, people are not signs!

[5:20] Greetings from Listener Lori!
[5:46] Today (4:12 AM PDT), the Sun trines Jupiter at 15º33’ Virgo and Taurus. Simple tasks and being our natural selves are the road to satisfaction and reward!
[7:48] Moon Report! The Moon is in its sign of rulership, Cancer and trines Saturn (3:43 AM PDT) at 2°55’ Cancer-Pisces. Emotions could get choppy this afternoon (1:33 PM PDT) when the Moon squares Mars at 7°56’ Cancer-Libra.
[9:25] The Cancer Moon will be Void-of-Course (VOC) for almost four hours on Sunday, September 10th, between its opposition to Pluto (5:47 AM PDT) and when it enters Leo (9:36 AM PDT). Unresolved feelings and hurts, and even regrets might rise to the surface.
[10:11] Greetings from Listener Teresa!
[10:35] Days of the Week: Friday (love), Saturday (work), and Sunday (rest).
[10:55] Friday is Venus' Day. Friday is named for Freya, the Norse goddess of love, beauty, fertility, and sex. Traditional homemakers made Friday the day that they cleaned their homes, but it's a fine day for romance, too!
[12:30] Saturday is Saturn's day. Any kind of hard physical labor is compatible with Saturn's energy. The traditional homemaker baked on Saturday so that fresh bread would be available for Sunday, the Sabbath.
[13:41] Sunday is the Sun's Day. This was the traditional day of rest, set aside for relaxation, recreation, and worship, all ruled by the Sun.
[14:52] And that's a wrap for the The Fourth Annual Podcast! Thanks for listening in all week long! Make your donation at BIGSKYASTROPOD.COM. [5:26 Moon Report! The Mercury-ruled Gemini Moon squares Neptune today (3:21 PM PDT) at 26°35’ Gemini-Pisces. It’s Void-of-Course for 6 ½ hours before it enters Cancer (9:59 PM PDT). Multitasking is favored over getting really intensely focused on one thing, but be careful about overdoing it.
[7:44] Thursday is Jupiter’s Day. Its name is derived from the Norse God, Thor, often associated with Jupiter.
[8:15] Jupiter compels us to share our thoughts and beliefs, teaching, lecturing, writing for publication. Jupiter also supports adventures to unfamiliar territory. In the traditional home, Thursday was marketing day, so spread your wealth around!
[9:16] Consider honoring Jupiter by wearing Jupiterian colors of turquoise and purple and/or his gemstones which are turquoise, topaz and lapis lazuli.
[10:20] Greetings from Listener Shellie!
[11:09] A closer look at the Sabian symbols. The Sabian symbols are 360 symbolic images and phrases, one for each degree of the zodiac. They were channeled by psychic Elsie Wheeler and recorded by astrologer Marc Edmund Jones in 1925 in San Diego, California.
[11:55] Astrologers use the symbols as a tool of divination, as points of focus for meditation, even as writing prompts, and they can take us into a birth chart in a little more imaginative way.
[13:22] Josh’s question about using the Sabian symbols (and…ox entrails?). Check out Lynda Hill’s book, 360 Degrees of Wisdom, for more information about Sabian symbols.

[5:18 ] Today, Mercury conjoins the Sun (4:09 AM PDT) at 13°36’ Virgo. Take advantage of the power and clarity of mind and communications that are represented by this cazimi condition of Mercury.
[6:27] Moon Report! The Last Quarter Mercury-ruled, Gemini Moon (3:21 PM PDT) is at 14º03’ Gemini on the Sabian symbol 15 Gemini, Two Dutch children talking. Just a heads up, as the Moon squares Mercury today (1:45 PM PDT), feelings may not match up with words.
[7:35] Tuneful greetings from Listener Emily!
[8:20] The name Wednesday is derived from “Wodensday”, a nod to the Norse God Odin, which was called Woden in old English. Woden and Mercury shared association with communication, knowledge, and travel, and eventually referred to the same day of the week. Since Mercury is associated with manual and mental dexterity, mend clothing, study, communicate, and run neighborhood errands.
[10:44] A closer look at the Lunar Phase Family Cycles. Let’s give a Big Sky Astrology shout out to Celeste Brooks of Astrology by Celeste, who tipped April off to these cycles. Check out their interview on Episode 141. Dietrich Pessin’s book is a fine resource on these cycles as well.

[5:28] Today is Tuesday, and that is Mars' Day. Mars-ruled Tuesday was set aside for ironing in the traditional home because Mars has an affinity for heat and metal. Assertiveness, confrontation, using sharp tools, exercise and wearing red and/or diamonds are all ways to celebrate the red, warrior planet, Mars.
[7:37] Greetings from Listener Stephanie!
[8:26] Moon Report! The Moon is in Taurus on Tuesday morning and makes a trine aspect to Pluto at 28°10’ Capricorn (9:45 AM PDT) before going Void-of-Course for 3 ¼ hours before it enters Gemini (1:06 PM PDT). Appreciate the power and privilege that come with having the necessities of life covered.
[9:45] The Moon squares Saturn at 03°06’ of Gemini-Pisces (6:49 PM PDT), another reminder of how truly fortunate you are.
[10:23] A look at the Void-of-Course Moon. It's a period of varying length between the Moon's last major aspect (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition) to other planets and until it changes signs. The Nodes, Chiron, asteroids and angles are not included.
[12:28] Some say that if you initiate something on a VOC Moon, nothing would come of the matter. Don’t believe it! April met her hubby on a VOC Moon and their marriage is 30 years strong.
[14:01] Darrell Martinie, the Cosmic Muffin, favored a VOC Moon for breaking habits and letting things go.

[6:12] Mercury trines Jupiter on Sep. 4 (3:29 AM PDT) at 15º34’ Virgo and Taurus. Mercury’s Sabian symbol is 16 Virgo, An Orangutan, and Jupiter is on 16 Taurus, An old man tries in vain to share the mysteries.
[6:50] This is the second of three trines forming between Mercury and Jupiter, beginning with the first on August 9, and the last coming on Sep. 25. Bring your honest, unadorned self to everything that you have to say, write and communicate.
[7:47] A few hours later (7:10 AM PDT), Jupiter stations retrograde at 15º34’ Taurus. It’s retrograde through Dec. 30, when it turns direct at 05º34’ Taurus. This is the degree of the lunar eclipse on October 28, 2023 as well. Look to your own inner guidance on subjects like beliefs, religion, education, travel and adventure.
[9:01] Greetings from Listener Ann!
[9:36] Moon Report! Today’s Moon is in relaxed, indulgent Taurus, one of her favorite signs.
[10:51] The Moon trines the Sun (4:12 AM PDT), squares Venus (5:08 AM PDT), and then aspects today’s Mercury-Jupiter configuration: trine Mercury (10:35 AM PDT) and conjoined Jupiter (11:05 AM PDT).
[11:46] When the Moon is in hard aspect with the planet that rules its sign, such as today’s Taurus Moon square Venus in Leo, it gives a little bit of a mixed message. Complications could interrupt the day’s flow of events.
[12:39] The Moon’s aspects to today’s Mercury/Jupiter trine suggests an excellent time for receiving cooperation, collaboration and sharing information.
[14:05] Monday is the Moon’s Day. Did you know that, traditionally, Monday was the day for laundry? The Moon is also connected to food and nurturing others.

[3:30] Moon Report! The Pisces Full Moon is on Aug. 30 (6:36 PM PDT) at 07°25’ Pisces-Virgo. The Sabian symbol for the Moon is 8 Pisces, Girl blowing a bugle, and the Sun is on 8 Virgo, First dancing instruction.
[5:20] The Full Moon is in a conjunction with Saturn (on 4 Pisces, Heavy traffic on a narrow isthmus), with both opposed the Sun. Check out Episode 192 for a recap of the Sun/Saturn opposition. Call attention to something that makes it hard to share a crowded space with others, then learn prescribed steps to move in harmony together.
[7:29] This Full Moon is part of a Lunar Phase Family Cycle that began with the Pisces New Moon on March 2, 2022. The First Quarter Moon in this cycle was on Nov. 30, 2022, and the Last Quarter Phase is on May 30, 2024. Are there some changes that we would like to make to finish up this particular cycle with a sense of spiritual purpose?
[8:53] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods for this week. On Aug. 28th (4:49 AM PDT), the Moon in Capricorn conjoins Pluto. It’s VOC for about 2 ¾ hours before entering Aquarius (7:32 AM PDT). Constrain emotions in order to get what you want, but don’t lose touch with them altogether!
[10:33] The Moon in Aquarius squares Uranus in Taurus on Aug. 29 (8:04 PM PDT). It’s VOC for about 11 hours (!!!) before entering Pisces on Aug. 30 (6:56 AM PDT). Think about how to change emotional patterns around connection with others vs the need for independence.
[11:53] On September 1, the Moon in Pisces sextiles Pluto in Capricorn (3:36 AM PDT). It's VOC for a little under two hours, then enters Aries (6:25 AM PDT). This is an opportunity to align with powerful forces that move us in the direction of meaningful accomplishment.
[13:37] Uranus stations retrograde on Aug. 28 (7:39 PM PDT, through Jan. 26, 2024) at 23°04’ Taurus. Focus on breaking out of patterns that keep you from being who you want to be, doing what you want to do, and feeling free.
[16:29] Venus, retrograde since July 22, stations direct on September 3 (6:20 PM PDT) at 12°12’ Leo on the Sabian symbol 13 Leo, An old sea captain rocking. Now we’ll be able to move ahead in matters of love and money.
[19:34] Listener Josh asks about why some career developments suggested in his chart are not showing up in his life.
